LAGOS - Nigeria President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s commitment towards eliminating poverty, terrorism and all forms of criminality in the country. Already, the President who also doubles as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) said government is currently implementing programmes and policies that would empower Nigerians to combat the challenges of poverty, criminality and terrorism. President Tinubu, who was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, gave the pledge on Saturday during the passing-out parade of Cadets of the 70 Regular Course, Direct Short Service Course 27 (Army) and Direct Short Service Course 31 (Air Force) of the Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna. Presenting the President’s address titled, “The Heroes of Nigeria’s Path to Prosperity and Security,” at the passing-out parade, the Vice President said, “every day, every minute, we are reminded of the consequences of economic and social disintegration around us. This is why we favour cooperation and the formation of bilateral and multilateral alliances to create opportunities for our people. “We are implementing programmes and policies to empower our citizens to combat the challenges of poverty, criminality, and terrorism. From preparing for the food security crisis triggered by the Russian-Ukrainian war, to responding to banditry attacks on farmers, natural flood disasters, and the repercussions of military coups, this administration has remained vigilant in devising solutions to mitigate their impact and enhance national security”. As part of moves to deal decisively with the criminal elements, President Tinubu noted that his government has embarked on a new era in the country’s national defence and security strategy. This, he said, would be driven by a resolute commitment to confront the substantial threats and challenges that confront us within the West African sub-region. He said: “I have directed all heads of defence and security institutions to unite in their efforts to protect our nation’s integrity and well-being, and as Chairman of the ECOWAS, we are diligently working to enhance our regional conflict management and development mechanisms. To forge a path towards greater peace, stability, and progress across West Africa and beyond is not negotiable” The President noted, however, that in tackling poverty inflicted on Nigerians by activities of the terror groups, he would treat every region equally and give them a sense of belonging in his government. His words: “Justice is the mainstay of prosperity, and so we are going to be fair to each region”. …….. READ MORE

JOS, PLATEAU - Recent reports on Leah Sharibu, the young girl taken captive by ISWAP terrorists over five years ago, is both confusing and disheartening. Confusing because there have been unsubstantiated rumors and scant information regarding the whereabouts of Leah. There were a few reports by those who were released or had escaped claiming that she might have been married off and given birth to two children. No pictures, audio or video has ever surfaced and, if anything, these were assumptions based on her age and condition of captivity. Leah Sharibu as she appeared in a 2018 photo. Courtesy of Sharibu family. Why should we believe, “Local security sources made this revelation in a report”? If they have intelligence on Leah’s whereabouts and any information, then where are the Nigerian armed forces? Why isn’t the government involved in securing her release? Disheartening because only so often do we hear anything on Leah Sharibu. On the two-year anniversary of Leah’s capture President Buhari said that, “…we redouble our efforts for Leah’s return, we can never allow the terrorists to divide us…”. Nathan and Rebecca Sharibu are asking, “What happened to that promise?” Buhari left office without fulfilling that promise of rescuing our daughter Leah. Our family remains grief-stricken by our daughter’s capture and ongoing imprisonment, even as the Nigerian government has been unsuccessful in securing her release. In March 2020, Leah’s father, Nathan Sharibu, pleaded, “I have not heard anything from Federal, state and local governments since my daughter was abducted. I am even confused now. I need your assistance to put pressure on the Federal Government to do something about the release of my daughter”. We recall that on February 19, 2018, Leah Sharibu was kidnapped along with 109 of her classmates from the Government Girls Science and Technical School in Dapchi, Yobe State, Nigeria by ISWAP, a faction of Boko Haram. Most were released (five lost their lives); but Leah – because she refused to renounce her Christian faith – has remained in captivity over five years, during which time she has been forced to bear two children by her captors. It is so sad that abductions of students are still ongoing even under this new administration. About a week ago we woke up to the news of students abducted from Zamfara. This is very shameful and disheartening to Nigerian parents. Alongside the terrible economic hardship of today’s economy, parents still have to grapple with the safety of their children in school. ……. READ MORE

ABUJA FCT - The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has slammed President Bola Tinubu over his 63rd Independence Day address to Nigerians, claiming it was empty and bereft of ideas. The PDP also said the speech by the President was merely aspirational in the wrong direction, especially in the face of the harrowing experiences being encountered by Nigerians under the All Progressives Congress, APC, administration. According to the party, “Tinubu’s admission in his speech that his administration is responsible for the current excruciating hardship in the country validates PDP’s position that the Tinubu-led government lacks the competence, capacity, required skills and humaneness to effectively run the affairs of the nation”. This was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Hon. Debo Ologunagba. The PDP insisted that Nigerians do not need to pass through agonizing hardship as it claimed was being excused by the President if the nation is run by a government that has the required vision and skills to harness and manage the nation’s economic potential and national comparative advantage. “The expectation of Nigerians on a day like this was for a Presidential speech that will provide concrete solutions to critical challenges of the nation, including security, as well as the crisis in the electricity and petroleum sectors. “Indeed, any serious government with requisite capacity and vision will set a Marshall Plan on every critical sector which has the capacity to galvanize and stimulate the economy through job creation. “The party holds that the manifest non-preparedness and hasty implementation of ill-planned policies by the current APC administration triggered a catastrophic economic failure with unprecedented crippling effect on the productive sector and agonizing hardship on Nigerians,” the PDP said. …….
