Activists Without Borders strongly condemn the recent wave of racially motivated riots that have erupted across the United Kingdom. These violent acts, driven by far-right extremists harbouring anti-migrant, Islamophobic, and racist sentiments, represent a profound assault on the values of tolerance and equality. The violence, which began in response to the tragic stabbing of children in Southport on 29 July 2024 and was exacerbated by the spread of false information falsely identifying the attacker as a Muslim migrant, is an alarming manifestation of deep-seated prejudice and hatred.
We recognise that this violence is not merely a manifestation of unrest but a reflection of systemic issues deeply rooted in racism and Islamophobia. Activists Without Borders asserts that the culpability for these riots extends beyond the immediate perpetrators. It lies with a political establishment that has consistently failed to safeguard communities from the rising threat of right-wing extremism. The ongoing normalization and legitimisation of Islamophobic and anti-migrant rhetoric, driven by both political figures and media outlets seeking electoral or financial gain, have created a dangerous environment that has emboldened extremists.
The recent attacks have not only targeted Muslims and migrants but have also extended to other minority communities, including Black, South Asian, and East and Southeast Asian individuals. This violence is orchestrated by a complex network of far-right, fascist, white supremacist, and neo-Nazi groups. In response, immediate and robust measures must be implemented to protect these communities and to address the underlying factors contributing to this surge in hatred.
We call on the UK government to take decisive action to ensure the safety of all affected communities. This includes not only the immediate prosecution of those directly involved but also a comprehensive approach to combat the ideologies and networks that fuel such violence. We urge the government to resist the temptation to use these riots as a pretext to expand police powers or introduce further anti-protest legislation, which disproportionately impacts minority and progressive groups.
The systemic issues behind these riots are longstanding. The ‘Prevent’ counter-terrorism strategy, which has been widely criticised for institutional Islamophobia, must be urgently reformed. It is crucial that this strategy addresses the far-right ideologies that underpin these attacks and recognises the decentralised, digital nature of the networks promoting hatred.
Moreover, the UK must reform its immigration and asylum policies to align with international human rights standards, ensuring fairness and compassion. Stronger regulation is needed to combat misinformation and hateful reportage in both traditional and social media. Strategies to enhance media literacy and critical thinking are essential in today’s digital age, given the dominance of right-wing media outlets and the lack of media pluralism.
Activists Without Borders remains committed to promoting human rights and combating racism and extremism. We stand in solidarity with those affected and call for a return to principles of justice, equality, and respect for all.
